Social an creative opportunities for women at home with young children
Each term we hold a variety of sessions, including Womens Health, Arts & Crafts, Information and our Community Arts Project (CAP) Sessions, these are targeted specifically at the needs of our group members. Each term we get together and discuss what we are interested in learning, teaching and sharing with our fellow members, then we decide on the topics for the following term.

Week 1 - Shrink Dinks
I have realised I am the shrinkie queen, like a child in a candy store, I thrived in in this session! We designed, we coloured, we created and then we hit them with the heat gun and prayed. This session was so much fun!Katerina
Week 2 - Tree of Life
I love this little project, not least because I can get it finished in one session, and it's a nice gift. We got to rummage through all our beads selecting colours and shapes to adorn the plaited branches of the tree. The end result looks lovely hung in a sunny window, I'll be making more of these at home!

Week 5 - Community Arts Project
Today we created tie-up blankets from polar fleece material. Some members of the group also did applique onto one of the blankets. These blankets will be going to Sapa Cultural Centre in Vietnam. Thank you to everyone for contributing!

Week 6 - Community Arts Project
Today we continued making no-sew polar fleece blankets for Jenna to take to a community education centre inVietnam. The centre accommodates and educates young children from outlying rural areas. We cut and tied two blankets and began the more delicate job of making and appliqueing cut outs onto them. There was plenty of chatting, coffee and cake to go along with our busy fingers - a lovely morning!

Below are some summeries of sessions held in Term 2 2009.
Creating your own Vision Board - Julie Cooke & Carol Guy - 28th April 2009
At first, I thought that the whole idea of creating a vision board of my goals and aspirations would be far too confronting. I wasn't too sure what my goals were (apart from the day to day staying sane thing) let alone having to create a poster of the goals. Thankfully the wonderful facilitators Julie and Carol suggested that we look through some magazines to get inspiration. After flicking through some magazines, I found some pictures and phrases that resonated with me, as well as catching up on the latest Brad and Ange goss. In no time at all, I had created a poster that was at least a good starting point in helping me think further ahead than the next 24 hours. The poster is now hung up in the bedroom and I see daily what I would like to achieve in the future.

Making Wheat Heat Bags - 5th May
When I saw that we were making heat packs I thought "oh no we have to use a sewing machine, I don't know how to sew". But when I arrived at group Kellie was super organised and everything was very straight forward. So we started by cutting out the material then putting pins in to hold our bag shapes together and then we sewed them together. The sewing was a lot easier then I remember from high school and I managed to do it without sewing my fingers as well☺. We filled our bags with wheat and lavender and then sewed them closed. I was so excited that I had actually made something at group and that it is something useful. I had a really fantastic morning as did all of the other ladies from what I could tell. Thank you to Kellie for sharing her pattern with us and also for running the morning, we all appreciate your effort and time taken to do this.

This week's session was a quiet and restful one, as our planned activity was postponed due to illness (flu season starts!). We decided to run a "UFO" (unfinished object) session instead, and we just spent the time chatting over cups of coffee and yummy biscuits. Some of us were diligent, bringing sewing etc. from home and others of us were happy to chill out! It was nice to have the chance to reflect after the small but successful official opening of the "In Our Footprints" sculpture garden the previous Friday.

P aper Quilting with Michaela Laurie - 19th May 2009
Today was paper quilting, not quilting as I had thought! I was a little unsure but Michaela had boxes of fantastic papers and lets us rummage through as well as having some kits for tags already made up. We started with a gift tag that was pretty quick and not too complicated but turned out amazing and by then I was hooked. After that we managed to make a card and embellish an envelope to go with it. It was a great morning, everyone managed to finish 2 beautiful projects to take home and I discovered yet ANOTHER craft that I really don't have time to take up, (but still will anyway!).

Scrapbooking with Robyn Lewis - 26th May 2009
Robyn Lewis came along to show us her extensive range of scrapbooking products including papers, punches and albums just to name a few, that are all available to purchase from Creative Memories. Everyone that had photos was able to use all the different shades and designs of papers available, to end up with a lovely scrapbooking page using their favourite photos to take home. I was the lucky person to win the lucky door prize and received a Disney scrapbooking pack including papers and stickers that was very exciting for me, just have to do a couple more scrapbooking pages now.

Community Arts Project - From One Mother to Another - 2nd & 9th June 2009
This year's Community Arts Project (CAP) will utilise our existing sewing skills, or be a great introduction to sewing for those who are new to machine sewing. We are making play mats for babies from Karinya House. We are aiming to make over 50 bags/mats, so have been very busy cutting out circles of fabric for the front and back of mats as well as wadding (soft stuff as padding), using Kellie's large, cardboard template. We have had a wonderful production-line going with tracing the template onto bolts of fabric, cutting them off and cutting each circle. There are plenty more to do! We also welcomed Jackie Gallagher to the group on the 2nd of June to speak to us about the work of Karinya House and Erin House, its 'sister' facility. The Houses are staffed mainly by volunteers, and I think we all agree that they provide a remarkable and much-needed role in the community. For those who missed that session, Karinya House was set up by a small group of people who saw a need in the Canberra area for practical help to new mums and pregnant women without appropriate support or accommodation. More can be read about the work of Karinya House at www.karinyahouse.asn.au Kellie Edwards is co-ordinating the project and has prepared detailed instructions so that members and visitors can construct these mats in a series of sessions. For those members who are not confident with sewing, it is a chance to once again learn new skills, or just have a cuppa, cut out fabric, iron fabric, hold a baby while someone else sews, or just watch and enjoy a break. Community Arts' Projects are designed so that anyone can join in at any stage of the project and make their contribution. We hope to see lots of members for the next sessions in Term 3.

Decorating with Buttons with Kaye Lister - 16th June 2009
We had a really fun day when Kaye came to BWG and showed us how to decorate with buttons. We could choose between canvas or a photo frame. There was a large amount of materials, and everyone came up with beautiful artworks. Not to mention the yummy cake and scones!!

Dealing with Perfectionism - 23rd June 2009
Presenter Rosemary Lee started us all off by having us introduce ourselves and our children - along the way we had quite a few laughs as we heard from mums about the (im)possibility of being perfect in every way, and never mind the house, with children around. Rosemary's approach was to get us thinking about "what happens if we aren't perfect?", and by sharing our stories and ideas, we pretty soon could reassure ourselves that the sky would not fall in and our children would still grow up loved and well. Sure takes the pressure off! I found it reassuring to identify with so many common situations as the discussion went around the room. It made me realise that even though there are days that are really hard, and I wonder why I seem to be the only one not keeping all those balls in the air, in fact no one without a celebrity entourage of helpers does actually do it all, let alone perfectly, let alone every time and all the time...so, let's be kind to ourselves! Part of that is about questioning the expectations we have of ourselves, and then making decisions about how we spend our time and energy that are right for us rather than anyone else. I've decided I'll park the perfectionism for a while, at least until the kids leave home...
